Looking for something practical to do to push back against the currents during this pretty awful week? Here are a few things you might consider.
First, call your US congressperson to ask them to vote against HR 28, a terrible sports ban on trans athletes. Emily Quinn has fantastic, simple, easy scripts you can use right here — both for D and R reps! And you can find your rep’s phone number here.
Second, it’s always a good day to call your US Senators and tell them to vote against Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s nomination as Health and Human Services secretary. Yesterday, the physicians of the Committee to Protect Health Care released a letter explaining their opposition that you might read for inspiration. The Guardian’s write up says:
Kennedy has a long record of spreading conspiracy theories about vaccines and other scientific research, the letter explains, and cites an example of him visiting Samoa in 2019 where he spread misinformation about the measles vaccine, sparking a measles outbreak that killed 83 people, mostly children under the age of five.
You can find your US Senators here.
Third, if you’re horrified by the fires in Los Angeles, Celeste Pewter is on the ball, as always – posting a list of places you can donate to. Talia Jane also posted Mutual Aid Los Angeles Network’s list of resources and a donation link. I donated to Ktown for All to help elderly folks in Korea Town on the recommendation of Regular Meghan, and I gave to the GoFundMe for comics writer David Booher, whose home just burned down.
Best wishes to everyone. This is a hell of a week (derogatory), and I’m rooting for all of us. ❤️
