Who we are

Our website address is: https://gregpak.net/. This is the community action, non-business-related website and blog of writer and photojournalist Greg Pak.

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

This website does not enable comments, allow user account creation or uploading of media from users, provide a built-in newsletter, or run advertising, so it does not collect information about visitors for those kinds of services. But this website is hosted by Automattic through their company WordPress.com, which collects information about visitors in order to provide hosting. You can read Automattic’s Privacy Policy here. You can read Automattic’s cookie policy here.

WordPress.com and Jetpack – Subscriptions

Visitors to this site can subscribe to this site via WordPress.com the “subscribe” button on this site in order to receive a notification when a new post is made to the site. When you subscribe, the administrators of gregpak.net will be able to see your WordPress.com username (if you have a WordPress.com account) and/or your email (if you do not have a WordPress.com account) and the date and time you subscribed. WordPress.com will then automatically send you notifications of new posts via its Jetpack software.

This is how Automattic, WordPress.com’s parent company, describes its data collection for subscribers: “Follower and Subscriber Information: When a visitor signs up to follow or subscribe to a Site using Jetpack or WordPress.com, we collect the sign-up information requested by the Site, which typically includes an email address.”

Here’s how Jetpack, which is run by Automattic, describes its use of data for subscriptions:

Data Used: To initiate and process subscriptions, the following information is used: subscriber’s email address and the ID of the post or comment (depending on the specific subscription being processed). In the event of a new subscription being initiated, we also collect some basic server data, including all of the subscribing user’s HTTP request headers, the IP address from which the subscribing user is viewing the page, and the URI which was given in order to access the page (REQUEST_URI and DOCUMENT_URI). This server data used for the exclusive purpose of monitoring and preventing abuse and spam.

Activity Tracked: Functionality cookies are set for a duration of 347 days to remember a visitor’s blog and post subscription choices if, in fact, they have an active subscription.

The administrators of this site can only see your email and/or WordPress username and the date you signed up, not your IP address or the other information listed above that WordPress.com and Jetpack collects on its end. The Jetpack software provides the administrators of this site data on the aggregate number of opens and clicks from email subscriptions, but administrators cannot see information about opens and clicks linked to individual subscribers. You can cancel your subscription at any time using your WordPress.com interface or the link in the confirmation email you receive when you subscribe.

Comments

We do not currently have comments enabled. But if comments ever were enabled, these policies would apply:

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

We do not currently make it possible for users to upload media to the website. But if that functionality ever were enabled, this would apply:

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Newsletter

We currently collect email addresses to send a newsletter through this site via Buttondown.

  • Email address;
  • Names;
  • IP address;
  • Newsletter: opens, clicks, opt-ins

No identifiable information is otherwise tracked outside this website except for the email address and info above.

Who we share your data with

We do not share your data with any third parties, unless in response to a legal request (like a search warrant, court order or subpoena) or in reporting a suspected crime to the authorities.

How long we retain your data

All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
